Guidelines For Student Clinic Talks

Format

q       15 minutes in duration (for large topics, 30 minutes is acceptable)

q       Three Parts (size of each will depend on topic)

o       Evidence Based Guidelines for Screening / Prevention

o       Simple Differential Diagnosis for Finding / Positive Screen

o       Treatment Modalities

Do’s

q       talks must clearly use evidence-based medical guidelines for screening and treatment

q       use Guidelines Online to get the recommendations for screening and treatment

o       remember that not all guidelines are created equal – some have biases and some are not by physicians

o       The US Task Force and Canadian Task Force are quite good

q       for treatment, consult one of our attendings, another clinician or specialist, or the literature

q       handouts should be one single-sided page (two sides if you want to add graphs or figures)

Don’ts

q       do not distribute something you printed out directly from an online book – make your own summary
